Iwantja-Coasters
Iwantja arts and crafts at Indulkana
is 8 km from the Stuart Highway
in The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands
of South Australia. Established
in the 60's - 12 square miles
of rocky ridge, fenced off on
Granite Downs Station for the
'Blacks Camp' because it was seen
as no good for anything else.
People are mainly Yankunytjatjara.
In 1981 artists were shown lino
printing, which they took to readily,
being similar to wood carving
from artefacts. Imagery
reflects the environment, people's
interaction with it, dreaming
stories, body marks for ceremonies
and much more, portraying the
rich observational kaleidoscope
of like as it is for the Anangu
Aboriginal person. Freed
from only natural pigments Artists
now explore colour with energy
and skill closer depicting the
observed landscape. Original
Prints are held in many collections
and galleries throughout Australia.
Set of 6 exquisitely designed
and unique coasters in a decorated
cardboard box. AUD$19
